DECONSTRUCTION

The tenement house at 21 Targowa Street was built in the early 20th century. At the time, Targowa was the main street of a thriving industrial district. It survived two world wars, roof collapses, numerous floods and finally burned down in 2000.
I wanted the painting I was to work on to include a metaphor for this history, a used object ready to be recycled and given a new quality. The graphic was to become part of the city’s public space. I took into account both the neighborhood itself and the neighboring buildings. This part of Warsaw’s Praga district is quite neglected, with numerous old tenement houses, mostly from the early 20th century, so I decided on a black and white image. I created an imitation of compressed sheet metal ready for recycling. I used the features of an expressive painting to make it easily visible from a distance. With dynamic divisions, different directions of bending lines and shifting light, the graphic deconstructed the form of a simple building block.
